What is Bowen

Bowen is a gentle form of natural healing

TOM BOWEN

This therapy was pioneered by Tom Bowen (1916-1982).  He developed this therapy in Australia because he was fascinated by the different postures people had and how this related to their symptoms of ill-health or muscle pain etc.

Tom Bowen worked closely with some associates who he entrusted to document his work.  His fascination with bodywork came from his desire to help people who were suffering.  His work was not promoted and he did not teach it.  He allowed only a few therapists to watch him work.  He was dedicated to helping the poor and disenfranchised in the local community; also setting up a free clinic for the less able bodied children.  He also worked at his local football club helping them with injuries.

Tom had a keen interest in animals, in particular horses.  He would be called out by his local neighbours to help with farm animals and his technique with animals was also documented and taught alongside the human technique.

What is Bowen?

  • Bowen is a myofascial technique, working over muscles and fascia

to help release tightness and increase mobility

  • Involving gentle moves
  • Working through light clothing, at specific points on the body
  • Pauses between some series of moves
  • The therapist uses mainly fingers and thumbs to move over muscles, ligaments, tendons,

 fascia and joints

  • This therapy is gentle and can have many healing qualities
  • It  is relaxing which, in turn, can aid in relieving symptoms of stress and anxiety
  • Bowen can re-balance the body, bringing a wonderful feeling of wellbeing

This therapy needs to be experienced to appreciate its' subtlety and depth
