Equine Bowen

Bowen for Equines

Equine Bowen is a catalyst for the Body to trigger a response

Equines can sustain injuries without the rider knowing.  Bowen can allow the horse to perform at its' best for the rider through healing and relaxation.

Equine Bowen Therapy can benefit a wide range of conditions such as:

  •  A disunited gait or irregular action
  • Uneven wear of shoes
  • Muscle atrophy or uneven development
  • Stiffness on one rein
  • Cold back or sore back
  • Sluggish lymphatic system or weakened immune system
  • Uncharacteristic change of temperament
  • Deterioration of performance

Equine responses during treatments

Responses during the treatment may include:

  • Quietening with licking and chewing
  • Yawning
  • Dozy eyes and ears focussed on themselves
  • Slower breathing
  • Lifting and stretching limbs, stomping, pawing
  • Venous refill
  • Lymphatic drainage lines appearing
  • Processing - staring out into space
  • Urine becomes darker with the elimination of toxins
  • Foraging

The therapy session

Generally lasting around 60 minutes, the first one may be longer.  I allow 2 hours in my schedule for each horse because the session is determined by your equine who may choose to receive just a few moves and need more time to process.  Either the session ends after all moves are completed or they choose when they've had enough!

Just like humans, your equine can experience strains, sprains, sore muscles, discomfort and reduced movement - even just a stiff neck and shoulders! Bowen is a myofascial technique, working over muscles and fascia to help release tightness and increase mobility.  Animals appear to enjoy and be receptive to gentle touch therapies, such as the Bowen Technique; we are asking absolutely nothing of them, but we are offering them the chance to relax in a safe place with a very gentle healing technique.

I will often leave the stable with the equine free to move around during some moves so that they can process the emotional and physical changes that can be happening within.

Fascia

Like fishing nets, fascia can dry out and get stuck, break and become entangled with other structures.

I believe and can best explain it thus:

Gentle Bowen moves can encourage Fascia to break free from its' constraints, helping it to drink up the hydration offered by passing cells - Bowen can give the Fascia the space it needs to move into and breathe.

Cells

Blood and bodily fluids carry oxygen, hydration and nutrients etc. to the structures within the body, taking away toxins and de-oxygenated cells.  A miraculous journey of a million events happening all at once within your equine.

Bowen can affect these events by stimulating the lymphatic system which in turns aids the elimination of toxins.

Autonomic Nervous System

With Bowen the Autonomic Nervous System can switch from Sympathetic to Parasympathetic; meaning it can rest from being in flight or fight mode; looking within for healing, rest and recouperation.
